Published on May 1, 2011 by in Informational

Are you yearning for genuine relationships?    Hungering for purpose above self?    Sensing a need for challenging endeavor?    Searching for well-being beyond health?    I know I am!

U count. Your heart, soul, mind and body were created to work together for purpose and significance.  The relationships in your life are meant to help you in the process.

Jesus revealed the formula for optimum purpose and health: ”Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, all of your soul, all of your mind and all of your strength; and love your neighbor as yourself”.  That represents a hefty combination of committment and balance.

Take a journey with me, reading words that will encourage U to grow toward balanced character and become the person of purpose, relationship, and health that U were meant to be.

big decision: make small choices

big decision to make small choices

A long time ago I made a big decision; to make small choices.  Every day we are faced with choices, hundreds of small choices.  Your success in life is not based on the few really big decisions you make, but on the accumulation of hundreds and thousands of small choices.

I was recently at the office of my doctor, Eduardo Garcia.  He is a great guy, always ready to teach and talk.  He looked back over my records for the past 10 years and was amazed.  “You weigh one pound less than you did 10 years ago”, he said.  “Do you know how rare that is?”

I do.  And I know the secret of my success.  Big decision to make small choices.

In the recent economic crash, we ended up on our feet.  Many people we know didn’t do as well.  We knew people who lost their jobs along with my husband.  They didn’t know how they were going to make it through the next month.  We did.

Big decision to make small choices.

As students, we studied hard.  We each paid our own way through college, worked for a year, then paid our way through my graduate school degree (Bruce had a scholarship).

Big decision to make small choices.

I wanted to become certified as a personality trainer.  I worked and saved and sacrificed.  Now I have that credential.  It took 2 years.

Big decision to make small choices.

Are you ready to make a big decision?  Will you take it one step at a time, making hundreds of small choices?

There is nothing special about us.  Anyone can do it.  It only takes the right mindset.

My new goals group will be starting soon.  See my last blog for more details.  The group goes for 3 months, and includes a daily diary where you can record your small choices.

I will provide a link for a personality assessment.  Then I will coach you through the process of accomplishing your goals, based on your personality style.

Four goals, three months.  The first person to reply can join the group for free.

Big decision; make small choices.

success with goals: personality wise

My winter goals group has completed the three month program.  We’ve had fun, had some success, and most of us are moving on with new goals.  I am gearing up for a new goals group to start in June.  Will you be in on this class?  It’s goals with a twist: a personality twist.  The first person who responds will be able to join the group for free.

success with goals

Have you listened to motivational speakers talk about achieving goals?  Aren’t they exciting?  You walk out of the room just itching to get started on your goals.

Most of the high achievers that become speakers share some personality traits.  They are “type A”, they are naturally motivated by power, authority, competition, winning and success.  We call them dominant cholerics.  They don’t work at achieving, it’s play for them.

And we get excited and motivated just by listening to these great speakers.

We scribble down notes on the speaker’s pamphlet and can’t wait to get started on our new goals.  We might even purchase an expensive program or book on our way out the door. Read more…

prayer: when there is no answer

prayer unanswered

What do you do when there is no answer to your prayer?  No answer at all.  We can watch to see what Jesus did when his prayer was unanswered.  Jesus is the antidote to prayer, when there is no answer.

In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus exhibited his most passionate emotions in prayer.  In his humanness, he felt fear and anguish at the crucifixion that was ahead of him.  He prayed in such total agony, that sweat dropped off him like drops of blood.  His human body was consumed by intense emotion to such an extent that the normal functions of his body were altered.

Immediately after this, he found his supporters sound asleep; was betrayed by one of his closest friends; was arrested and hung on a cross.  So much for answers to prayer!  Read more…

don’t forget to breathe!

don't forget to breathe

“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being”.  Our first breath came from God.  Breath is the vehicle that carries life from the created atmosphere into our created bodies.  Just don’t forget to breathe!

Breathing is controlled by our brain stems; it is involuntary in that even when we sleep, we breathe.  Most people don’t think about how they breathe from day to day.  But breathing is important to our health; emotionally, physically, intellectually, spiritually and relationally.

The amount of air that we are capable of inhaling, called the vital capacity, is about 3 liters.  Our normal, at rest breathing is called tidal breathing, and that volume is a mere ½ liter.

It’s easy to forget how important and beneficial it is to breathe.  Deep breathing helps you to relax, to balance, and to energize yourself.  The best, quickest way to improve your outlook is to breathe.

Just breathe.

It’s free.

It’s easy.

It doesn’t take much time.

It will help you to focus on what you are doing.

It will help you to calm down and not say something you will be sorry for later.

It will help you to stay alert while you are praying.

It will deliver more oxygen to your brain while taking a test.

It will infuse your muscles with oxygen to give them more strength and less pain.

Here is a great blog post by Dr. Susan E. Brown, PhD.  Her blog is called the Better Bones Blog, and this entry is all about breathing. She will tell you everything you need to know.

Just don’t forget to breathe.

national day of prayer: krish dhanam

national day of prayer

Today is my birthday, and in honor of this day our nation designated the National Day of Prayer!  Just kidding…   I attended the Rochester (MI) Chamber Prayer Breakfast this morning and heard some inspiring music and an outstanding speaker, Mr. Krish Dhanam.

“The American Dream from an Indian Heart” is the title of Dhanam’s recent book. I think that the theme today could have been the “American Dream”, even though the nationally designated theme was “One Nation Under God”.

Let me explain.

The Men of Grace sang some stirring songs, as they usually do.  I have had the pleasure of hearing them a number of times before, and I’ve heard the testimonies of many of these men.  Most of them have come from the lowest place imaginable; on the streets, in drug addiction, in prison.  And through the great programs at Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac, MI, they have risen above the brokenness into a life of purpose, peace and power in Jesus Christ.

Then we were treated to the very professional speaker, Mr. Krish Dhanam.  Dhanam was born in India, received his graduate degree and immigrated to America with nine dollars to his name.  He was personally trained by Zig Ziglar, and has close association to Ravi Zacharias.  He has had success according to the world’s standards and according to Christian standards.

Dhanam was intriguing, provoking and entertaining.  He asked us what would be going through our minds as we lived our last day:

“I wish I had”

or

“I’m glad I did”.

There are so many juicy tidbits from this morning, but I want to focus on that one.

I think we would all agree that we would want to say, “I’m glad I did”.   Isn’t that what the American Dream is all about?  Accomplishing and achieving against all odds?

But I have some questions, for me and for you.

  • ·         Do you plan to say “I’m glad I did”?
  • ·         What have you done in your life this year that would cause you to say “I’m glad I did” ?
  • ·         If you were to die today, what things might be on your “I wish I had” list?
  • ·         What are you going to do in the next 3 months that will remove items from the “wish”
  • ·          list to the “did” list?

What odds are holding you back from your “did” list?  Are they really so insurmountable?

Or, as Dhanam postulated, “have we become jaded because we have lost our wonder?”

I would love to hear your responses.  Please feel free to comment.  I will as well.  Just got to think about it a bit!

about marriage: cleaning up messes

about marriage: cleaning up messes

How are messes cleaned up in your marriage?  I heard a story on a plane one time that I will never forget.  It was about a married couple that was having trouble cleaning up messes.

I was on my way home from Personality Training with Florence Littauer and her gang at CLASSeminars, Inc.

As we taxied to the runway in the Las Vegas airport, the salesman next to me started talking.  I think he might have been kind of nervous.  Also maybe a little hung over after his “conference” at the casinos.

He quickly found out what I had been doing in Las Vegas.  I told him that I was working on being certified as a Personality Trainer.  He picked up on that right away.  Salespeople usually like talking about personalities, especially theirs!

As I explained what I was going to do with my Certification, he asked if he could share a story with me so that I could give him some advice on how to handle things with his wife. Read more…

quality of life

quality of life

A google search for ‘quality of life’ reveals that millions of people want to know, what is quality of life?

Many people think of end of life decisions when they hear the term ‘quality of life’.  But life is so much more than the last few months.

The quality of your life should be your focus throughout your life.

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article entitled “A focus on quality of life helps medical providers see the big picture – and makes for healthier, happier patients”.

Along with the article, there was a survey that readers could respond to.  The results were surprising to me.  The survey asked the respondents to reflect on the past 30 days and answer the questions.  Here are some of the results:           Read more…

do nothing for 2 minutes

do nothing for 2 minutes

Challenge yourself to do nothing for 2 whole minutes.  Absolutely nothing.  I betcha you will have a hard time!  I tried it, and I was so tempted to pluck a few keys on the keyboard. ’

Here is a great website that helps you to do nothing for 2 minutes.  If you touch your keyboard or mouse, you fail!  Go ahead, try it.

It feels so good to just do nothing.

Relax your shoulders.

Let the muscles in your face fall.

Smile.

reading free books

world book night 2012

Free books were given away on World Book Night, a celebration of reading and books.  Tens of thousands of people shared free books with others in their communities across America to spread the joy and love of reading.  I was the glad recipient of a free book.

Today, I read an article in the local paper about E-readers.  Several Gallup surveys were cited that raised concerns about adults and reading.

In 1978 - 12% of adults in America hadn’t read a book in the past 12 months.

In 2005 - it was 17%.

And this year - 22%.

A list of American Library Association initiatives showed that something is being done to alleviate this trend.  However, most of the initiatives involved children.

If parents don’t read books, then their children won’t grow up to be readers either.

So I have decided that I will give away my free book to the first person who asks for it, provided they have not read a book in the past 12 months.  And they let me blog about their thoughts after they read the book.

The book is  The Poisonwood Bible.  It’s a best seller.  I’ve wanted to read it for some time, but I am willing to give it up so someone else can have the pleasure.

So, if you know someone who has not read a book in 12 months, and would appreciate the challenge, let them know.  Then contact me.  Either comment on this blog, or email me: debbie@u-count.info.
